Essential Actions and Updates for Feb 9, 2021

February 9, 2021 | COVID-19, Essential Actions

Dear GNJ Leaders and our congregations,

The following are essential actions and information for this week. This is also the week we remember the transfiguration story found in Matthew 17:1-9, the mystery and illumination that Jesus is the Son of God. A reminder that in the most challenging times, God is with us as we embrace the ways of Jesus and  carry out the mission of the church.

1. Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) – Pastors, Treasurers and Finance Chairpersons
Funding through the new round of PPP will be available until March 31, or until funds are depleted. Therefore, we encourage you to apply through your bank if you have not done so already. A helpful new list of do’s and don’ts for the process can be found here. Please also keep in mind that the SBA released a simplified version of the PPP loan forgiveness application for funding requests under $150,000. It requires less documentation, makes the process easier and may be fully forgiven if at least 60% of the funds are used for payroll costs, interest on mortgages and rent and utilities during the covered period. Additional details, including FAQs, can be found on the GNJ website here.

2. 2021 Billables and Shared Ministry FAQ Page – Pastors, Treasurers and Finance Chairpersons
As a follow-up to the updated billings email that was sent to you on the afternoon of Feb. 3, most churches should have received in the mail their billing statements reflecting the revised 2021 budget. To help guide you in setting up your revised budget plan, GNJ has created an FAQ page here. Important note: If you did not receive last week’s email, please contact us so that we can ensure you will receive any subsequent emails.

3. Year-End Statistical Reports Grace Period – Pastors, Treasurers and Finance Chairpersons
Year-end statistical reports were due Jan. 31. However, GNJ is extending a grace period until this Friday, Feb. 12. The statistical reports assist in reviewing a congregation’s progress, setting shared ministry apportionments and evaluating leadership administration. Please note that no shared ministry appeals will be allowed for churches who do not complete the statistics reporting. Details on how to file using Ezra are here.

4. 2021 May Annual Conference – All Clergy and Lay Members to the Annual Conference
The 2021 Annual Conference is slated for May 24-25. In preparation for this virtual event, all committees, boards and agencies are to submit an annual report for inclusion in the pre-conference journal. These reports as well as any legislative recommendations for the session are due Feb. 15. For details, please visit here. A full report from the assigned independent team looking into the budget shortfall will also be shared and discussed at this session.

5. 2021 Appointments – All Clergy and Laity
The 2021 Appointment season is in full swing. Thank you to all who are showing their commitment to the mission of the United Methodist Church by participating in this important process. Each Sunday at 1:00 p.m. the announcement of new appointments will be posted on the GNJ website. For the latest information on appointments, retirements and open churches, visit here.

In Christ,

GNJ Leadership
