Nearly 100 residents, church members, friends, and community leaders gathered at Flemington United Methodist Church on June 14 to dedicate the newly renovated Paul Huffman Fellowship Hall and celebrate the life and legacy of a beloved congregant whose stunning generosity made the transformation possible.
Huffman, a World War II veteran, retired postal supervisor, and lifelong Hunterdon County resident, passed away in 2019 at the age of 97. While many knew him as a faithful church member, baseball enthusiast, and familiar face around Flemington, few realized the extraordinary gift he had planned for the church he loved.
Several weeks after his passing, church leaders learned that Huffman had left a significant financial gift through his estate — a surprise bequest that ultimately funded the complete renovation of the fellowship hall.
“He did it very quietly and intentionally,” said Gerry Gibbs, a member of the church’s Board of Trustees. “Three or four weeks after he passed away, we received a letter informing us of his incredible gift to the church, and we were floored. We knew Paul was always generous and always giving, but we had no idea of the magnitude of the gift he planned to leave behind. He really has made it possible for this church to thrive, pay our bills, and stay ready to serve the community and this congregation, and for that I am truly grateful,” said Gibbs.
Peter Espeut, a longtime church member and trustee who often drove Huffman to and from church in his later years, recalled that Huffman frequently hinted at his plans.
“We’d stop at Burger King and Paul would order from the dollar menu,” Espeut said during the dedication ceremony. “On the ride home, he’d always tell me, ‘When I die, I’m going to take care of the church.’ But as Gerry said, I wouldn’t have imagined it in a million years,” Espeut joked, drawing laughter from the crowd.
The renovated facility now features updated infrastructure, accessibility improvements, and a modern commercial kitchen. Church leaders envision the hall as a gathering place not only for church activities, but also for nonprofit organizations, civic groups, educational programs, and community events.
“Paul’s legacy is much bigger than a building,” said Pastor Dianna Stone. “This space represents his love for this church and this community. Every person who gathers here, every community event that takes place here, and every life touched through this hall will continue the impact of his generosity.”
