Skylands District Foundational Leadership Training
The Foundational Leadership Training is designed for church officers, committee and team leaders, and people engaged in various ministries of the church to provide foundational understanding and leadership skills.  Two workshop sessions provides opportunity for participants to choose different options to learn about their area of ministry and other more general leadership skills.  There is no cost for the event, but pre-registration is requested so that we might be prepared with adequate numbers of materials for you.

Workshop Descriptions

Local Church Finances

Recommended for Finance chairs and committees, members of the church council, and other dealing with finances in the local church.

This workshop will provide participants guidance and direction in dealing effectively with the church financial systems.  In these ever-changing times, having a handle of what makes for an effective financial system in the church including record keeping, tax issues, budgeting, etc. is extremely important.

The Work of the Staff Parish Relations Committee

Recommended for chairs and members of the SPRC, Lay Leaders, Lay Members to Annual Conference

The SPRC has an important role in the life of the church as it deals with personnel matters and is the liaison between the church and the District Superintendent.  The workshop will cover the responsibilities of the SPRC, guidelines for dealing with conflict, and outline the committee’s role in the appointment making process.

Serving Together

Recommended for all participants

Ministry is a cooperative venture.  This workshop will provide an overview of how the different areas of responsibility in the congregation (Church Council, Trustees, Finance SPRC, etc.) serve together to provide for the on-going work of the church.  Included will be suggestions for running effective meetings for maximum effectiveness.

Holy Listening

Recommended for all participants

Listening is an important gift that we give one another.  Listening is an expression of value to another.   This workshop will focus on what it means to listen and provide guidelines and techniques for careful, thoughtful listening. When we listen to one another, it can be a holy moment that brings individuals, committees, and the church as a whole together.

Creating a (maybe Not-So-Creative) Website for Your Church

Recommended for persons involved communications – must register for both sessions – registration limited

Your church website could be better, if not more creative. Maybe it doesn’t exist at all, or maybe the volunteer who built it left your church. This workshop is for anyone interested in attempting to implement a new or better website for a local church. It might not help you create a creative website, but will present some suggestions about frameworks, how to lay out the pages, and popular and useful add-ons to use in building your new or updated (sometimes simpler) church website for more effective mission and ministry in this digital age.  Participants should bring a lap-top with them – at the end of the two sessions, they will leave with a basic web-site ready to launch. Additional instructions will be sent prior to the workshop.

Creating Worship Together

Recommended for worship chairs, worship team members, lay leaders and lay servants

Worship is a time for the gathered community to celebrate its oneness in Christ.  This workshop is designed to help congregations to build a worship team, plan for creative worship throughout the year, and engage new people in worship ministry.

The Ministry of the Board of Trustees

Recommended for trustees and persons dealing with property and insurance matters

The Board of Trustees has a myriad of responsibilities within the church.  Although much of the work of the trustees is behind the scenes, its work is integral in supporting the many ministries of the church.  This workshop will focus on a helping trustees to understand their function and help to network the various boards throughout the district.

Ministry with Children and Young People

Recommended for children’s workers, church council members, persons interested in ministry with young people

A vital congregation is a congregation that is growing younger.  The needs of children and young people are ever-changing, particularly in these challenging times.  This workshop will be an opportunity to explore together what works in young people’s ministry, and network children’s workers within the district to resource each other in strengthening this important part of our church’s work.

Mission Ministry Round-Table

Recommended for anyone working in mission or those interested in exploring new opportunities

Thrift shops, food pantries, feeding programs, clothing ministries, Operation Christmas Child – these are just a few of the mission ministries that are happening around the district in our local churches.  During this time, persons involved in various ministries and those interested in learning will gather for informal, guided conversation that will allow participants to share best practices and learn about how to grow and strengthen the ministries of our congregations in reaching out to persons in need.
