The Foundational Leadership Training is designed for church officers, committee leaders, team leaders, and people engaged in various ministries of the church to provide foundational understanding and leadership skills. Two workshop sessions provide opportunity for participants to choose different options to learn about their area of ministry and other more general leadership skills. There is no cost for the event, but pre-registration is requested so that we might be prepared with adequate numbers of materials for you.

Workshop Descriptions

Funding Ministry
Workshop Leader: Rev. David LeDuc
The task of the Finance Committee is funding the Lord’s ministry through the church. This session will review some foundational Finance Committee functions, discuss the realities of current church financial life, and explore some newer approaches to funding ministry into the future.

Staff Parish Relations Committee: The Three Most Important Things!
Workshop Leader: Rev. Vivian Rodeffer
This workshop will look at understanding the responsibilities of your church’s SPRC as they relate to the interactions between clergy and the congregation. This is a perfect session for SPRC members and other interested members of the congregation.

Trustees: Managing the Resources of the Congregation
Workshop Leader: Rev. James Ryoo
The seminar will cover the following:

A. Management Responsibilities

  • How to manage bequests, legacies, and trusts
  • How to manage church property policies for building use
  • How to manage insurance coverage
  • How to manage a building program

B. Requirement for Safe Sanctuaries Procedures in the UMC of GNJ

I Belong
Workshop Leader: Rev. Jevon Caldwell-Gross
We are created for community. There is an innate desire in all of us to belong. However, this desire is often met with so many barriers and we are plagued by fragmentation. This disconnection and detachment makes it hard if not impossible to envision a common future where we work together towards building a welcoming community. Perhaps we are called to be community builders for such a time as this. Come learn and explore how you can build community where God has placed you in your very own community.

Beyond the Building: Worship for a Wilderness People
Workshop Leader: Rev. Veronica Palmer
Church buildings are important to the worshipping community. Sometimes, larger buildings become an unsustainable burden, to the detriment of mission and ministry of a congregation. For this workshop, I will illustrate how one church uses the template of the Tabernacle to explore worship in a neutral space. This simulated wilderness experience enables the church to look at other options.

This process gives insight into the congregation’s relationship with its building that has become unsustainable. The resulting exploration allows the congregation to prepare to worship in an alternate space if necessary while revitalizing their ministry. Churches of any size may glean from this example, as it also aids in a path toward revitalization.
