Board of Church and Society Energy Audit Grant

March 17, 2008

Dear Pastors, Trustees, and Public Theology Advocates,

We are writing to you to inform you of a second opportunity to apply for an Energy Audit grant through the Peace with Justice Fund. Conducting an energy audit can help your church become a better environmental steward while also saving money.

The Board of Church and Society of the Greater New Jersey Conference had awarded grants of $250.00 each to 20 churches as an encouragement to them to have professional Energy Audits of their church buildings. Because a few of these churches have chosen not to proceed with these grants, the monies from those grants will be re-assigned to other applicants on a first come, first serve basis.  The deadline for The Board of Church and Society to receive church applications is April 30, 2008.  After that time, no further energy audit grants will be awarded this season.  All GNJUMC conference grants require the application below to be completed and either E-mailed or mailed to Bonnie Harley, as listed below.

Energy is a commodity which causes strife among nations and governments. Our Social Principles say under The Natural Community: "We affirm that we are responsible for the way we use the Lord's creation. We support social policies that promote the wise use of water, air, soil, minerals, and plants. We support the conservation of energy and oppose energy-using technologies that threaten human health. We are concerned for the humane treatment of animals and the respectful use of space."

The Grants for the Energy audits would be for "Basic Energy Audits" conducted through "Greenfaith" an interfaith environmental organization, located in New Brunswick, NJ....  www.greenfaith.org/

Why would your church apply for the Energy Audit Grant?  In recent times, issues related to energy use have taken on a newfound importance in our lives as Christians.  As we all know, energy costs are a significant part of our church's operating budgets - on average, the second highest fixed cost after personnel.

Recently many religious groups have realized that they need to conserve energy in order to save money, reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, and demonstrate good energy stewardship for their members and communities.  Several of our United Methodist churches have taken advantage of this offer and are well on their way to both reducing their carbon emissions and their utility bills.
