Objectives

This training is being sponsored by the Conference Board of Church and Society,  in partnership with GreenFaith, in an effort to effectively educate clergy and lay people to evaluate their own congregational properties in order to become more energy   efficient.

Participants will learn about the 12 most common opportunities for energy conservation in religious institutions, and then create a conservation plan for their own house of worship.  GreenFaith has conducted energy audits at over 75 houses of worship around New Jersey, and trained representatives of over 200 congregations to cut their energy use and costs.

By doing this training we follow our first social principle, "The Natural World", which states "All creation is the Lord's and we are responsible for the ways in which we use and abuse it."  (UMC Social Principles) and the Psalmist reminds us that "The earth is the Lord?s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it, . . ."  (Psalm 24:1)

Facilitator

Stacey Kennealy, is   Director of Sustainability at GreenFaith, where she directs the GreenFaith Sanctuary    Program, the first interfaith environmental certification program in the country.  Stacey directed the Green Flag, GreenFaith Schools Program during 2006-7, an initiative that equipped Jewish,  Christian and Islamic schools around New Jersey to "green" their facilities and integrate environmental themes into their curricula.  Prior to her work with GreenFaith, Stacey assisted with the Green Campus Initiative at the Lawrenceville School, alongside a team of researchers from Rutgers University.  She also worked for the Caribbean Conservation Corporation, tagging and monitoring sea turtles in Costa Rica. Stacey graduated with honors from Rutgers University in 2004 with dual degrees in Ecology and Environmental Policy.

About Greenfaith

A Powerful Mission
GreenFaith is New Jersey's interfaith coalition for the environment. Founded in 1992, we inspire, educate and mobilize people of diverse spiritual backgrounds to rediscover their relationship with the sacred in nature and to restore the earth for future generations.

Founded on Shared Beliefs
GreenFaith's work arises from beliefs shared by the world?s great religions:
Caring for the earth is a religious value.  Environmental stewardship is a moral responsibility.

Spirit - We grow spiritually through our relationship with the earth.
Justice - Everyone has the right to live in a clean, safe environment.
Stewardship - People of faith have a vital role to play in  restoring healthy ecosystems around the world.
