How You Can Prepare For Hurricane Sandy:

Dear Friends,

As our communities prepare for the potentially severe conditions of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Sandy over the next few days, please take extra precautions to ensure the safety of your churches and members.  Please do not take this storm lightly as many of the forecasts are predicting extremely high damaging winds, significant amounts of rainfall, and the potential of severe flooding.

There are many precautions you can take to minimize damage to your churches and buildings.  Below, you can download an Emergency Checklist that covers pre-storm, during storm and post-storm actions that can help to reduce damage and loss.

Since this particular storm is very unpredictable, it is easy to sit back and "wait to see" what happens.  We encourage you not to wait but to be proactive in securing your buildings.

The below checklist is also available on the GNJAC website at www.gnjumc.org

  • GNJAC Windstorm and Flood Loss Control [MS Word]  [PDF]

In addition to the checklist, please keep in mind the suggestions of the Conference Disaster Response Team:

Some things you can do now:

  • Engage in preparedness activities. Review your Family Emergency Plan and update as needed.

  • Be prepared to evacuate if local officials instruct you to do so.

  • Be prepared for potential long-term power outages.

  • Leaves! There a lot of leaves on the ground. Leaves are excellent material to clog/block storm drains, worsening local/neighborhood flooding. Get leaves and any other obstructing materials away from storm drains before this storm arrives.

  • Read and use the GNJAC Disaster Prep Top Ten List located here: http://www.gnjumc.org/pages/detail/369

  • Review the information made available from FEMA here: www.ready.gov/

If your church does experience a loss contact Sovereign Insurance IMMEDIATELY at:

We hope this information helps you to prepare for the impending storm with confidence.  Please keep all of the communities who will be affected in the GNJAC and beyond in your prayers as everyone braces for what could potentially be a very hazardous few days.

With prayers for safety for you and your loved ones,
