Laity Sunday (October 19, 2008)
One in Spirit, All in Ministry; In the Spirit of Fellowship by Sandy Zeigler
"If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin." (I John 1:6-7, NRSV, emphasis added.)
Laity Sunday is a day designed for the lay members of local congregations around the World to lead the worship service and give the clergy a much needed time away from the pulpit. As the Conference Director of Lay Speaking, I encourage all of our Greater New Jersey Conference Lay Speakers to make sure that their pastors find themselves in the pews this October.
And if your church does not have active lay speakers, I encourage other members of the laity to "get out of the boat" and test the waters as many of the most meaningful messages come to the people through the words and actions of the laity. An instructional file can be found in the Lay Speaking section of the conference website that will assist in arranging the worship service. We are ALL in ministry.
