Mission to Honduras

This past week Young Adult Ministry sponsored by the Bloomsbury United Methodist Church traveled to Honduras to serve the people of the Fuerzes Unidas as part of the VIM program.

The young adults worked at the United Methodist Church in the impoverished barrio of Fuerzas Unidas, just outside the city of Tegucigalpa.  There they taught the local women to sew on the 4 new sewing machines that were purchased with the funds the Bloomsbury Church sent to Honduras. As well as beading, which was a big hit.  The ladies hope that they might be able to use this skill for a small cottage industry.  In addition, they did some light construction.  However, the primary project for the group is providing Vacation Bible School for 150 local children.

It is summer vacation for the children in this Honduras neighborhood.  For these children there are no trips to beach or amusement parks.  Instead, the thrill for the summer is the bible school that the local church hosted the VBS with the help of the people in the small towns of Bloomsbury and Asbury, New Jersey.  The group brought all the supplies for this program; nearly a ½ ton of crayons, markers, coloring pages, balls, jump ropes, everything you need for having fun.  As well as all the sewing supplies and some construction materials and medical supplies. The people in the Bloomsbury and Asbury churches and their neighbors in the surrounding communities have provided most of the materials.

The young adults have been laboring hard the past few months running fundraisers to help pay for the trip.  The local communities have supported them by attending dinners at the church, and yard sales, and making donations for babysitting.  However, they know their work is not be finished now that they have returned from Honduras.  Foreign mission work is expensive; therefore, the team will be actively fundraising for quite a while.

But, as you can tell from these smiling faces that the hard work has not dampened the spirit of the group.  This group have been having a wonderful time and trust all this work will be well worth it.  If you would like to learn more about this trip or how to contribute please see bloomsburyumc.com
